CRCOG's hugely important Bicycle and Pedestrian Count begins in two weeks and volunteers are still needed. Can you help?
Why is this so HUGELY important? Bike ped statistics gauge general trends in activity and make the all important case to fund projects that benefit bicyclists and pedestrians in the future. Bike ped counts help document changes in bike and pedestrian activity that relate to CTfastrak, East Coast Greenway connections, bike lanes on Burnside Avenue, New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Commuter Rail, and other upcoming projects that the bike ped community regularly dreams about. How much time do you need from me? When and where do you need me? Count times are generally 2 hours in length and are located in areas throughout the Capitol Region. Weekday counts will be conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday (September 9, 10 or 11) from 4-6 PM unless otherwise noted and Weekend counts will be conducted on Saturday o Sunday (September 13 or 14) from 11AM-1PM unless otherwise noted. Can I look at map for CRCOG's count locations? As a matter of fact, yes you can. Click here for a map of CRCOG's count locations. Priority areas are indicated with a red star and secondary locations are indicated with a blue diamond. Who do I contact to volunteer? If you haven’t already done so, please contact Mike Cipriano at mcipriano@crcog.org or 860-522-2217 x223 to sign up for a count location. Middletown’s Complete Streets Committee is working to make the city’s streets safer and more “friendly” to all users—including walkers, cyclists and users of public transportation.
The committee is organizing a "traffic count" event on September 17 to document the current number of motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at a few key locations in the city. The Committee will use the documentation to secure funding for future projects. The documentation is required. Middletown's Complete Streets Committee is looking for volunteers to spend 1 hour and 15 minutes, either near Stop & Shop on Saybrook Road or at Macdonough School. The task will be to count (using a form and clipboard, which is provided) all cars, trucks, walkers and cyclists who enter a specific intersection during the given time period. Two volunteers are needed at each location—one to count motor vehicles and one to count other users. To volunteer call 860-398-3771. - Submitted by Ethan Hutchings, City of New Haven Transportation, Traffic & Parking Department Hall of Records The City of New Haven will be conducting the 7th Annual Point-in-Time Survey and Parking Count on October 16th & 17th, 2012. We are looking for volunteers to participate in collecting pedestrian, cyclist and parking data within downtown New Haven. As this is will be the 7th survey, a clear upward trend in the number of daily multimodal commuters within the downtown transportation network is evident. Your assistance in collecting data for this survey will place the city in a better position to accommodate daily commuters with future transportation infrastructure improvements. What we are asking you to do: We are looking for people who can assist in collecting data by standing at an intersection to count pedestrians or cyclists. We are also looking for people who can walk through a parking lot or a garage to count empty spaces - since we already have the maximum capacity for all garages and lots in this study. You are welcome to volunteer your time to assist on both days but we also understand that you may have considerable time constraints. We can safely say that if you were to volunteer to count at one corner of an intersection, the amount of time it would take from start to finish would be one hour, as we can make arrangements to pre-assign an intersection to you, with instructions already given on how to perform the count. Counting at one garage or lot would be less than one hour if that is all the time you can give. You can also come to the staging area prior to the count times listed, where we will assign a location & review the information with you so you are comfortable with the counting process. Please review the flyers below to see what times we need people to perform each type of count. Contact information is provided at the bottom of the flyers so you can let us know when you can volunteer or if you would like to follow up with us for additional information. If you plan on volunteering either in the morning and/or mid-day, breakfast and lunch will be provided out of the staging area - which will be in the Hearing Room at the Hall of Records building @ 200 Orange St in downtown New Haven. Thank you in advance, as your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Be a part of documenting the increasing levels of walking and bicycling in Connecticut!
The Capitol Region Council of Governments is participating in the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Data Collection program this year. Counts will take place throughout the Capitol Region from September 8 through September 16. Counters observe a location for 2 hours, noting how many bicyclists and pedestrians pass by. This will provide useful information that can help us in planning bicycle and pedestrian facilities. We are looking for folks who can count from 4 to 6 PM on a weekday or 12 to 2 PM (some locations, 1 to 3 PM) on the weekend. You can count at one location for one 2 hour stint, or if you are energetic, you can volunteer for more than one day and location. If you are interested, please email Annmarie Clarke, amclarke@crcog.org, and let her know of any preferences regarding location or count time. CRCOG will take it from there and line you up with a location, count forms and instructions. Thanks! |
